New “Open Storefronts” Program Allows Retailers to Operate OutsideBased on the apparent success of outdoor dining during the COVID-19 pandemic, New York City is launching a comparable “Open Storefronts” program that allows first-floor storefront businesses to use a portion of the sidewalk to conduct businesses. These businesses will be able to display merchandise, complete transactions, and provide areas for customers to line up, under certain restrictions and an online form that can be found here. The Open Storefronts program is scheduled to be available from October 30 to December 31, 2020.The Open Storefronts program does not apply only to retail businesses, but also repair stores, personal care services, and dry-cleaning and laundry services. Storefront businesses may use up to 5 feet from the edge of the storefront and five feet from the ground, so long as a minimum of 8 feet remains on the sidewalk for a clear path.Marc Reiner’s current practice includes General Commercial Litigation; the registration of trademarks; litigation and counseling in the areas of trademarks, copyrights, false advertising, cybersquatting, and violations of the rights of privacy and publicity.
