Michael Norton serves as of counsel to HBA in the litigation of commercial disputes as well as representing clients in connection with matters arising in bankruptcy and insolvency. Mr. Norton is a seasoned litigator with many years of experience representing both plaintiffs and defendants in state and federal courts, including in federal bankruptcy courts. Mr. Norton also has extensive practice in commercial arbitrations and meditations. During the course of his career, Mr. Norton has represented a diverse group of companies, firms and individuals involved business and commercial litigation matters of all types, including contractual disputes, partnership and employment-related disputes; intellectual property matters, including trademark and copyright claims; negligence and insurance-related matters; allegations of fraud and breach of fiduciary duty; and in connection with insolvencies and bankruptcies, including defending actions brought by trustees and others seeking avoidances and claims for damages. He also represents clients involved in consensual and voluntary workouts and insolvency proceedings.
Mr. Norton has served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York. Following law school, Mr. Norton served as law clerk on the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in New York.
He began his career in private practice with the law firm of Cravath Swaine & Moore LLP and also practiced law at the firm of Shearman & Sterling in New York. Mr. Norton was previously a litigation and bankruptcy partner at the New York offices of King & Spalding.
Mr. Norton has for many years served pro bono as a Court Appointed Mediator for the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York.
He is admitted to practice before all New York state and federal courts and a number of federal courts in other jurisdictions across the country.
